Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsPaid advertising can answer the urgent searches that organic work takes months to reach. It can also spend a great deal on people who cannot hire you, such as the searcher who wants a free lawyer, a student writing a paper or a person reading a jail roster for a neighbor. This hub compares the channels a criminal defense firm might use, explains what each is good for, flags the privacy and bar-rule issues that apply and offers a sensible order. Management is $895 a month for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, with ad spend paid directly to the platform and no contract.
The channel map
| Channel | Who sees the ad | Where it fits a defense firm | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google search ads | Someone typing a charge, a place or a question right now | The first channel to try for most practices, since the need is urgent and specific | Wasted clicks from free-lawyer, job and informational searches. Needs a long negative list. |
| Google Local Services Ads | People searching for a local lawyer in areas where this format runs | Worth checking where offered, since it can place a firm near the top with a screening badge | Availability, categories and requirements vary and change. Confirm eligibility and your bar rules on pay-per-lead structures. |
| Microsoft (Bing) search ads | A smaller search audience, often older or on work computers | Useful as a second platform once Google is running well | Lower volume. Copy the Google structure only after it has proven itself. |
| Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) | People scrolling feeds, not searching | Educational and reputation content, community presence, record-clearing information | Platform policy restricts ads that suggest they know something about the viewer's own record, and household privacy matters. |
| Retargeting | People who visited your site and left | Rarely suitable for charge pages; sometimes for record-clearing content | An ad that follows someone around on a shared device can expose them. Often best left off. |
| ChatGPT ads | People inside an assistant conversation | New and changing, so a modest, time-limited experiment is as far as we would go | Formats are new and change. Do not move a core budget here. |
Order matters more than breadth. A firm running one channel well usually learns more than a firm running five poorly.
The situation that shapes everything
In criminal defense marketing, the person who needs you has been surprised. A phone call at two in the morning, an officer at the door, a notice in the mail. They search while stressed and decide quickly, often on the first call that connects. That is why search advertising, which captures the moment of need, works differently here than feed advertising, which interrupts a moment of something else.
It is also why the quality of the phone matters more than any other part of the account. A campaign that produces many calls and no answered ones is worse than no campaign, because it burns money and sends frightened people elsewhere. Before spending anything, we ask who answers, when, how quickly and what is said. The answer shapes the budget, the schedule and the channels more than any keyword list does.
Suggested order
Choose a number, a greeting, an answering process and hours the criminal defense firm can honor. Test it by calling at awkward times.
Open a narrow campaign for one or two charge families in counties you can serve, with call tracking and strict negatives.
Where your area and category are eligible, review the requirements, the cost structure and your bar's rules, then decide if a trial fits.
Bing is a common next step. Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) are added for education or reputation only after the search side is stable.
Treat it as an experiment with a fixed, modest budget and a clear stop date.
Calls, consultations and retained matters guide what to widen, narrow or stop.
Rules of thumb
Because the first month is a test
Set a modest spend and a clear review date. If tracking shows promise, widen. If the phone cannot handle the volume, fix that first.
Not every call is worth buying
A firm that does not handle white-collar cases should not bid on them. Excluding what you decline is as valuable as including what you take.
The right yardstick
Track calls answered and consultations scheduled. Clicks alone tell you nothing about whether a family felt safe calling.
Compliance first
Headlines that imply results, superlatives and comparative claims are the usual troubles. We route copy to you for approval.
Privacy as policy
We keep sensitive page visits and form content out of audience lists, and we skip retargeting where it could expose someone.
How budgets are built
We do not offer a budget benchmark, because fees, competition and acceptance rates differ too much between a rural felony practice and a metro misdemeanor practice. The sound method is to begin with your own economics: what a typical retained matter brings in, how many consultations become retainers and how many calls become consultations. Those three numbers, shared with us, give a realistic ceiling on what a call can be worth to you and therefore what you can afford to pay to get it.
That number is then set against what the platform actually charges in your county, which we learn from live data rather than guess. We never present a price estimate as a promise. The first month is an experiment with a hard review. For details on structure and negatives, see the Google Ads guide, and for feed advertising see the Meta Ads guide.
The first month
Owners often expect advertising to begin with keywords. In practice it begins with a conversation about the phone, the courthouses and the intake routine. We write down the charge families you want, the counties you will cover and the hours you can honor. We listen to how a typical call is answered, then call the criminal defense firm ourselves at awkward times. We agree on what counts as a success, such as a consultation scheduled, and how it will be recorded.
Only then does a campaign open, and it opens small. The first weeks are about learning: which search terms appear, which ones belong on the negative list, which counties produce calls and which produce clicks without conversations. By the end of the month, the criminal defense firm should have a plain picture of what came in, what was answered and what it would cost to widen the program, and should be free to stop if the numbers do not make sense. There is no contract, so the first month is an honest experiment, not the start of a commitment.
Stay in your lane
Adjacent, not the same business
Bond agents advertise on many of the same searches. Arrangements between lawyers and bond agents, such as referral swaps, can be restricted. We do not set them up. Keep negatives in place so you do not pay for clicks aimed at bail bond shoppers.
Traffic you do not want
Pages that republish booking data attract the same worried visitors. They are not a good home for your brand, and a firm should not buy ads against their names or copy their content.
Check the rules
Some sell premium positions or badges. Rules on paid rankings and the way they are described vary, so ask your ethics counsel before agreeing to one.
Do not wander
Bidding on immigration, family or civil terms because they share a word with criminal law wastes money and confuses callers.
The investment
Paid media questions
Management is billed per platform: $895 a month for one, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three. Whatever you decide to spend on the ads themselves is paid straight to the platform, never through us, and you may cancel in any month.
For most criminal defense firms, Google search ads, once the phone process is ready. Add others only after the first one is tracked and stable.
That depends on your location and practice category, and Google changes availability. Check current eligibility and your bar's rules about the pricing model before trying them.
We do not build campaigns from arrest records, and many bars restrict contact with people soon after an arrest. Search ads reach people who look for you. Ask your ethics counsel about anything beyond that.
Because an ad on a shared phone or computer can reveal that someone looked into a criminal matter. We generally avoid it, or limit it to record-clearing content, with your approval.
Only as an early, small, measured test, if at all. It is a new channel and not a replacement for search.
No. No one can honestly promise that. We commit to tracking and to explaining what the data shows.
Long enough to see a full set of calls and consultations, which for most firms means at least several weeks, since defense calls arrive in uneven bursts. We review search terms weekly at first, then set a clear review date so no test drifts on without a decision.
Your firm, or an answering partner you trust. We help you test the greeting, the speed and the after-hours routine, because ads that send frightened people to an unanswered line do more harm than good.
