States the situation plainly
A charge name and a place are more reassuring than adjectives. Avoid language that implies the reader is guilty or that the case is hopeless.

Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsGoogle Ads can put a criminal defense firm in front of a person at the moment of need, which is both its strength and its danger. The same word that signals a real prospect, such as "arrested," also signals a reporter, a student, a job seeker, a person who wants a free lawyer and a relative with no money. This guide covers how to structure campaigns by charge family, which negatives to load before the first click, how schedules and phone handling change the plan, how to land visitors on pages that fit their fear and how to track results without leaking private facts to ad platforms. Management starts at $895 a month, with ad spend paid separately to Google and no contract.
Campaign structure
| Campaign | Example queries it should catch | Landing page | Special handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theft and property | "shoplifting lawyer", "theft charge attorney [county]" | Theft page with a county hub | Many first-time offenders, so the tone must be calm. |
| Assault and domestic charges | "assault charge lawyer", "domestic violence criminal defense attorney" | Page that explains court stages and no-contact orders in general terms | Careful copy. No messaging that implies an outcome. |
| Drug charges | "drug possession lawyer", "possession with intent attorney" | Drug page that separates possession from distribution | Exclude treatment and rehab searches. |
| Weapons | "gun charge attorney", "weapons possession lawyer" | Weapons page | Separate from other campaigns because the intent is distinct. |
| White-collar and investigation | "federal investigation lawyer", "fraud charge attorney" | Confidential-consultation page | Low volume. Often better with a broader audience of professionals. |
| Juvenile | "juvenile criminal defense lawyer", "my son was arrested juvenile" | Parent-focused page | The searcher is a parent, so write for them. |
| Warrants and bail | "warrant lawyer", "bond hearing attorney" | Warrant and first-appearance page | Run only when the phone is answered at all hours you advertise. |
| Record clearing | "expungement lawyer [state]", "seal record attorney" | Eligibility page per state | Different intent and pace. Keep it separate. |
| Brand | Your criminal defense firm and attorney names | Home or bio page | Cheap and protects the criminal defense firm name. |
DUI is a different search world and often a different practice. Add a campaign only if you want to compete on those terms.
The negative list
The first month of a new criminal defense account usually teaches the same lesson: the search terms report shows how many people typing criminal-law words are not prospects. The common categories are predictable. People looking for jobs, such as "criminal defense attorney salary" or "public defender jobs." Students and writers: "criminal law degree," "mock trial," "essay on bail." People seeking a free or court-appointed lawyer: "free lawyer," "public defender near me," "legal aid." Searches for inmate information: "jail roster," "inmate search," "mugshots," "who got arrested today." Searches for bail bonds, which are a different business. Searches tied to a television series or a famous case. And, in every market, searches for other kinds of law that happen to include a shared word.
We load a long list of phrase and exact negatives before spending, and we expand it from the search terms report every week for the first month, then monthly. We are careful with broad negatives. Blocking the word "free" outright also blocks "free consultation," which can be a perfectly good phrase to appear for, if your bar permits describing a consultation that way. Phrase match on narrower terms such as "free lawyer" is safer.
One judgment call belongs to the criminal defense firm. Some people searching "public defender" are actually unsure whether they qualify and are open to a conversation. An informational page that explains the difference honestly, without pushing, can serve them, but a paid click on that query often is not worth it. We decide with you, and we revisit the choice after seeing the data.
Hours and phones
Advertising around the clock is tempting because arrests do not follow office hours. But an ad is an offer, and an unanswered call at midnight leaves a frightened person feeling abandoned. The right schedule is the one the criminal defense firm can honor. If an attorney or a trained answering partner takes calls overnight, the account can run at night, with call-only formats and a number that rings through. If not, the account can pause after hours or send people to a page that says honestly when someone will call back and offers a discreet way to ask for it.
Call quality is also part of the setup. We recommend testing the greeting, the speed of pickup and the way calls move to an attorney. We also suggest asking early in each call whether it is safe to call back at this number, and noting the caller's relationship to the person charged, because it changes what you say next.
Setup
Target only the places where your attorneys appear. Exclude areas you cannot serve, and watch location settings so the ads follow people in the area and not merely those showing interest in it.
Headlines state the charge family, the place and a human fact such as a confidential call. They never state results or superlatives. You approve every line.
Each campaign points to a page whose first screen mirrors the ad, shows a phone number and offers a short, private contact option.
Calls are counted by duration and source. Forms record only that a submission happened, not what was written. Sensitive page visits are not used to build audience lists.
We start with a small number of ad groups and expand as the data shows which ones produce consultations.
The first month gets close attention, especially to search terms. Later reviews focus on calls, consultations and retained matters.
What a good ad does
No euphemisms, no drama
A charge name and a place are more reassuring than adjectives. Avoid language that implies the reader is guilty or that the case is hopeless.
A confidential conversation
Invite a call, mention the hours honestly and, if true, mention a Spanish-speaking option.
No outcomes, no superlatives
Leave out win rates, "best" claims and any language that implies special influence. Have counsel approve every variation.
Details that help
Call buttons, location, and sitelinks that lead to charge pages. Avoid promotions that look like discounts on legal services unless your bar allows them.
Measurement
| Measure | Source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Calls over a set duration | Call tracking | Separates real conversations from misdials and hang-ups. |
| Calls answered live | Call tracking and intake notes | Shows whether the phone is the bottleneck. |
| Caller relationship | Intake notes | Reveals how many calls come from families and how many from the accused. |
| Consultations booked and held | Your calendar | The first meaningful business outcome. |
| Retained matters | Your records | The one that justifies the spend. |
| Search terms | Google Ads reports | Feeds the negative list and reveals new topics. |
How to set the budget
We do not quote budget benchmarks or typical click prices, because they vary a great deal by county, charge and competition. Start with what a retained matter is worth to your criminal defense firm, how often a consultation becomes a retainer and how often a call becomes a consultation. Those numbers give a ceiling for what a call can cost you. Then we look at what Google actually charges in your market and set a modest first-month budget as an experiment.
The right question is not "how much should we spend?" but "how many more calls can we answer well?" Add budget only when the phone can take it. See the paid channels overview for how this fits alongside other platforms and the intake guide for the call process.
Negative keywords
| Group | Examples of the kind of phrase | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Jobs and careers | salary, jobs, internship, how to become a criminal lawyer | Phrase negative. |
| Education and writing | degree, textbook, essay, mock trial, quiz | Phrase negative. |
| Free or appointed help | free lawyer, legal aid, public defender office, pro bono | Phrase negatives, reviewed with you since some of these readers need honest information. |
| Inmate and roster searches | inmate search, jail roster, mugshots, booking log, who got arrested | Phrase and exact negatives. These people are looking for information, not counsel. |
| Bail bonds | bail bondsman, bail bond near me | Phrase negative unless you handle bond hearings and want bond-related terms, in which case separate campaign and wording. |
| Entertainment and news | TV show, documentary, true crime, trial live | Phrase negative. |
| Other legal fields | divorce, immigration, injury, estate, trademark | Campaign level, since some may be core in other accounts. |
We reconsider each negative against the search terms report, since a blocked phrase can hide a valid query.
The landing page
When someone clicks an ad about a drug possession charge in a particular county, the landing page should say so in its first line, show a tappable number and promise something modest: a confidential conversation, an honest description of the process. It should not ask for a story. It should not open with a long firm history. It should offer a call-back form with a few fields and a note about how the information will be used.
Below the first screen, the page can explain the stages of that kind of case in general terms, introduce the attorney who handles them, mention languages and hours and answer a few questions. Pages that are too short lose trust. Pages that are too long lose the person who has only a moment. The pages we write try to answer the first three questions a frightened reader has and then invite a call.

Google Ads questions
Running Google Ads alone is $895 a month for management, rising to $1,595 once a second platform joins. The ad budget is yours and goes to Google directly. There is no term to sign.
Only if you want those cases. It is its own competitive world, often with separate specialist firms, and it can crowd out the rest of the budget if mixed into a general campaign.
If someone answers, yes. If not, pause overnight or direct visitors to a page that says honestly when a call will come.
Some bars restrict how free consultations are described. Ask your ethics counsel, and avoid broad negatives that would block the phrase if you do use it.
No. We do not use arrest records for outreach. Search ads reach people who look for help themselves.
Search ads can begin generating calls soon after launch, but quality takes weeks to judge, and we report on consultations instead of clicks.
We set up tracking so that form content and sensitive page visits are not shared, and we recommend your counsel review the privacy language on the site.
